Spring Idea Plant Your Flowers Like This

When I shared a post about one of my moms favorite flowers the geranium I received feedback about how many of you loved the flower or thought you would plant some this year. When I came upon this today I knew that I had to share it with you all. I can remember when I was growing up many times that I would see old wheel barrows and wagons filled with flowers.

I love thrifting, junking and as you all know love my flowers as well I am already making plans for our yard this year and this idea I love. It takes a few of my ideas and places them together in one. Odd drawers are fairly cheap at thrift stores and sometimes you will find them being tossed out. Why not use them for container gardening? Our Review

We were sent the Girls Aloha Sun Dress in pink. One thing my little princess loves is her dresses. The one thing that she does not know is that nana is giving her more than just another pretty dress. My thoughts is that this book is a very important tool for parents. It seems that I have always been a person who reads books that offer tips and guides. I was a young mother and had shelves  of books as well as relied on what experts had to say in the area of taking care of infants, toddlers and children. I know love the new book by Lori Lite. It seems to offer tips on just what parents are needing to help their child be proud of who they are and not feel so stressed out in life. So many parents are enlisting their children in activities to get ahead.  While my own mother enlisted us in activities as we grew up we always had that sense of belonging and not the stress to be the best. The world is more competitive in my opinion and it is important to have fun in what they do as well. I simply love that Lite points this out in her book.

Brady Bunch Porkchops and a birthday

Happy Birthday Florence Henderson!!! Famous for being the onscreen mom of the Brady Bunch Florence in a sense became the beloved T.V. mom. 
Famous for her cooking skills has led her a long way as well. This recipe commonly known as the Brady Bunch porkchop recipe is one that my family simply loves and I hope you enjoy as well
2 cups  
1% low-fat milk
2 teaspoons
2 lbs boneless pork chops (8 in total, about 1/2 inch thick)
3 1/2 cups  fresh breadcrumbs       
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon  salt
2 tablespoons  olive oil
2 tablespoons butter

In a large shallow dish, like a 9x13 pan, stir together milk and first amount of salt. Add pork chops (you could use bone-in chops, if you wish) and marinate (if you want to call it that; it's more of a milk brine methinks), covered and in fridge, for at least one hour (maximum 4 hours). Turn chops once, halfway through marinating/brining time. When ready to cook chops, preheat oven to 200F and have ready an ovenproof platter. In a shallow dish (like a pie plate), combine freshly made bread crumbs (grind bread in food processor to make crumbs; you'll need about 8 slices) with garlic powder, rosemary, thyme and remaining amount of salt. Remove chops from milk and let excess milk drip off, then dredge chops in bread crumbs, lightly patting crumbs onto both sides of chops so they adhere.
Place breaded pork chops on a tray, keeping chops in one layer. In a large 12-inch skillet over high heat, place butter and oil. Saute chops, 2 1/2 to 3 minutes per side only. DO NOT OVERCOOK, do not crowd chops in skillet, and turn only once; chops should be golden brown and just cooked through. Place cooked chops on platter and keep warm in preheated oven. Cook remaining chops (you may have to do 3 batches, depending on the size of your pan and how many chops you do); add more oil and butter to pan if necessary (it likely will be). I recommend serving with applesauce

Homemade Gumdrops

2-1/2 cups sugar, divided
1-1/3 cups applesauce
2 packages (3 ounces each) red or green gelatin
2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1 teaspoon lemon juice
In a large saucepan, combine 2 cups sugar, applesauce, red or green gelatin, unflavored gelatin and lemon juice; let stand for 1 minute. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil for 1 minute. Immediately pour into a cold 11-in. x 7-in. baking dish coated with cooking spray. Refrigerate for 3 hours or until firm. With a spatula, loosen gelatin from sides of pan. To remove, invert onto waxed paper. Using kitchen scissors or small sharp cookie cutters dipped on hot water, cut into 1-in. squares or shapes. Place on waxed paper. Dry at room temperature for about 8 hours or until slightly sticky. Roll in remaining sugar. Store in an airtight container. Yield: About 1-3/4

Women History -- League of Women Voters

The road to the right for women to vote was a long ride. On February 14, 1920 pioneer woman suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt founded the League of Women voters to secure the right for women to vote and  a few months later Congress granted the right for American women to vote. The League of Women voters achieved a goal but continues to fight the fight even today. The updated legislation seeks to better protect all voters against discrimination and ensure Americans are guaranteed their right to vote. Catts goal when she founded the  League of womens voters was to ensure that  equal access to the ballot box and this mission continues on.

Frederick Douglas Day

In my first year of college I learned a lot. There were many great teachers and one of my favorites was my history teacher. He seemed to bring it all to life. One assignment that he gave us was to read the autobiography of Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Very interesting story of a man who lived life as a slave, a freeman and an American social reformer. Through his writings Douglas could share his story and impressed many. Douglass escaped slavery and became leader of the abolitionist movement. Many were amazed at his oratory and writing skills and he stood as a living reminder to those who believed that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens.

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in February of 1818. Since records were not kept well in those times his exact birthdate is an unknown. Douglass chose to celebrate his birthday on Valentines day. At the tender age of 20 Douglass fled from slavery and travelled to Massachusetts. Douglass would record his life as a slave in a book that he would later write. Douglass would be chased by slave catchers until a British friend would purchase his freedom. Douglass would become a newspaper man and founded The North Star.

Douglas wrote several books including Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became influential in its support for abolition. He wrote two more autobiographies, with his last, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, published in 1881 and covering events through and after the Civil War. After the Civil War, Douglass remained active in the United States' struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Without his approval he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate of Victoria Woodhull on the impracticable and small Equal Rights Party ticket. Douglass held multiple public offices.


Geraniums, one of my mothers favorite flowers. They are easy to grow annuals fit well in home garden, container gardens, flower beds, and even as house plants. Believe me that my mother pretty much grew them anywhere and every where she could. In pots, in flower beds, in plastic container, and wherever she could find a place to plant them. One of the places I know she used to love to keep them was in my bedroom in the wintertime. I loved how they looked but the odor they had was a bit to extreme for me. Just the other day I mentioned those flowers as well.

Geraniums are popular for the big, bright bloom and because they are so easy to grow. Geraniums also have a long garden life blooming from summer through fall. Bring them inside and they continue to live. Geraniums are hardy plants that will withstand light frosts.  The one thing that geraniums do desire is lots of sun and temps below 70 degrees.

 One of the easiest ways to start growing geraniums is to buy small plants from garden stores at very low prices and plant them around the garden and in containers. Planted in full or partial shade with a bit of compost and a general purpose fertilizer to maximize growth and plant health. Mid summer should see the plants growing bright white, red or pink blooms. One easy tip to keep the plant blooming is to pinch or cut off the blooms after they die.

Geraniums have a life span of about 18 months and will last through the winter as indoor houseplants. One good way to keep them blooming inside is to trim them back to 1/3 of what they are outside. They prefer soil on the dry side and a bit of fertilizer once a month helps.

Red Velvet Cake

Red Deviled Cake is delicious and oh so perfect for valentine day. The definition of deviled is dark, rich, chocolate, that is stimulating spicy "deviled" Devils food cake has went by many names including red velvet, red devils cake, waldorf Astoria and $100 dollar cake Red velvet cake is a beautiful mild chocolate flavor cake that is starting red. Complemented with a thick white frosting with different regions of the country using different types of frosting.

Red devil cake has at times been criticized for the amount of food dye. The red dye is what gives the delicious cake the reddish brown color. Devils food cake was originally red but normally thought of as dark chocolate. Most red deviled  cakes made today are created with processed cocoa and a touch of red food coloring to create the brownish red color that has been made super. Southern states historically the red velvet cake color would have been made up from beets and cocoa.

History of the Red Velvet Cake
1902 - Devil's food cake was the favorite dessert of the early 1900s. In 1902, the recipe first appeared  in an American cookbook called Mrs. Rorer's New Cook Book by Sarah Tyson Rorer. By 1913, recipes began appearing in cookbooks across America.
1950s - Some people think that this cake originated in the 1950s at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The restaurant archives can’t produce any evidence or records of this, but because this version is so popular, the restaurant likes to take credit for it.
1940s - In the 1940s, a rumor was spread that a customer asked for a copy of the recipe and was given a bill in the amount of $100. According to the rumor, the angry customer, apparently with revenge in mind, then began circulating the recipe along with her story. As with most urban legends, they seem to have a life of their own, creeping through a society one person at a time.
1970s - In the 1970s, the cakes’ popularity faded when red dye was linked to cancer.

Strawberry Fudge Pie

1 (15 oz) Refrigerated Pie Crust

Brownie Layer
10 1/4 package(s) Fudge Brownie Mix
1/4 cup(s) oil
2 tablespoon(s) water
1 egg
Cheesecake Layer
1 (8 oz) package(s) cream cheese softened
1/4 cup(s) sugar
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1 egg
3 cup(s) fresh strawberries halved
2 tablespoon(s) hot fudge ice cream topping

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Place pie crust in 9 inch glass pie pan as directed for one crust filled pie. In large bowl combine all brownie layer ingredients; beat 50 strokes with spoon. Spread in bottom of crust lined pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until top is shinny and center is set. If necessary, cover edges of crust with foil after 15-20 minutes of baking to prevent excess browning. Meanwhile, in small bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and 1 egg. Beat until smooth. Working quickly, drop cream cheese mixture bu small spoonfuls over partially baked brownies; carefully spread to cover brownie layer. Bake an additional 18 to 20 minutes or until cream cheese is set. Cool at least 1 hr. Arrange strawberry halves, cut side down, over top of cream cheese layer. Refrigerate 1 hr. Immediately before serving, place fudge in microwavable safe bowl. DEFROST for 45 seconds. Drizzle on top of pie with a plastic bag or icing piper.

Holiday Plum Pudding : My Daddys Favorite

This is a repost of one of my families favorite recipes. I am sharing it again as February 13, is the day to celebrate plum pudding. I hope you enjoy

My daddy loved plum pudding and when I was a kid grandma would make this for him each and every year. I could never quite understand what all the fuss was about as there were so many delicious goodies to be had but to daddy Plum Pudding was the star. Plum Pudding if you are not familiar with is round, thick, sweet and delicious. With a strong history leading back to kings and castles the plum pudding was something all alike would partake in. I can remember grandma as she collected those coffee cans in order to prepare the families Christmas Puddin'

* Six (6) candied and sliced pineapple rings
* 1 lb. whole candied cherries
* 1 lb. raisins, dark and golden mixed
* 1 lb. dates, pitted and chopped
* 1 cup chopped citron
* 1/2 cup each chopped, candied orange and lemon peel

Put the prepared fruit into a large bowl.

* 2 cups sifted flour
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 2 teaspoons cinnamon
* 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon allspice
* 1/2 teaspoon cloves

Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the flour over the fruit and set aside. In a second bowl, sift the rest of the flour together with the soda, salt and spices, and set aside.

* Three (3) eggs
* Juice of one lemon
* 1-3/4 cups buttermilk
* 1/2 cup oil
* 1/4 cup orange juice
* 1/4 cup brandy
Beat the eggs. Then add the buttermilk and remaining ingredients to the egg mixture, and mix together well. Now blend the liquid mixture with the flour mixture until it forms a batter.
Pour the batter into the large bowl containing your fruit. Use a wooden spoon to stir and mix well, making sure the fruit is well-covered with batter. (now here is something that I will never forget grandma using all those coffee cans) Grease 1 lb coffee cans and pour the mixture into each until they are about 3/4 full. Cover each one securely with foil, and place in a pot or steamer. Steam in any covered pot or canner, allowing the water to rise to no more than halfway up the filled tins.
Steam your puddings in consistently heated water for at least 4 hours. Check a tin periodically to note when the steaming is complete, when the dessert no longer appears creamy. When your plum pudding is steamed, remove it to a counter or dry shelf and let it cool for about 30 minutes.
While the puddings are cooling, cut up cheesecloth pieces amply enough to securely wrap around the individual puddings, and soak each cloth in brandy. (Grandma only did this step for the grown ups I believe she used a sweet syrup mixture for the kids but can not find her recipe to share)
Carefully remove each cooled pudding from its mold. Wrap each pudding in a cheesecloth. Over wrap each packet in aluminum foil, then set them to mature in a corner of your refrigerator for two weeks to a month. When you’re ready to serve, steam each pudding again for about an hour.

Happy Birthday President Abe , a bit of history and a delicious recipe as well

Today, February 12th is the birthday of Illinois famous individuals it is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Abe Lincoln as he is often called is known by  many Americans as the 16th President of the United States. "Honest Abe" was born in the wilderness of Hardin County Kentucky on February 12, 1809 In 1861 Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States a country that would soon wage war among itself one that he believed would save the nation and stop the secession of the southern states. Abraham Lincoln was also the author of the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation that ended slavery in the U.S.

Abraham would also be another first but this act would be his last. He was the first president  to be assassinated. On Good Friday, April 14, 1865 he would be shot and mortally wounded by John wilkes Booth in Fords theatre

Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861 Mary Todd Lincoln and the President moved into the White House. With them one possession that they brought was a cookbook that she purchased while living in Springfield, Illinois. The title of the cookbook was "Miss Leslies Complete Cookery" authored by Eliza Leslie. Mrs. Lincoln learned to rely on this cookbook and the recipes that were in it one can only assume were served as meals to President Lincoln and the family
 One recipe found within this book is Apple Bread Pudding. I found this information on the blog the history kitchen where you will see the author of this blog has done her research. On this blog I also found an updated version of the

Apple Bread Pudding Ingredients

  • 12 small baking apples (original recipe calls for Pippins-- I used Granny Smiths)
  • 1 large lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the dish
  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (homemade crumbs from artisan bread are best)

Cream Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp almond extract
Servings: 12

How to Make Apple Bread Pudding

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and core the apples, then slice them very thin. Place the slices in a large mixing bowl. Pour lemon juice and lemon zest over the apples along with the nutmeg. Toss the apples with a spatula till evenly coated by the lemon juice, zest, and nutmeg Chop the unsalted butter into several very small chunks.
  • Grease a 9x13 baking dish with unsalted butter. Create a single thick layer of apple slices on the bottom of the dish, covering the entire surface with apples.
  • Sprinkle a generous layer of brown sugar on top of the apples. Dot a few bits of butter across the top of the sugar. Sprinkle a thin layer of bread crumbs on top of the butter. Repeat this process of layering-- apple slices, brown sugar, butter, and bread crumbs-- until the dish is full. Finish the dish with a thin layer of bread crumbs. Bake the pudding uncovered for 50-60 minutes until the edges brown, the pudding is cooked through, and the apples are soft. Serve warm topped with cream sauce, if desired

How to Make Cream Sauce

  • Pour heavy whipping cream into a small pot and warm slowly over medium heat, whisking occasionally as it warms.
  • When cream begins to boil, whisk in powdered sugar, nutmeg, and almond extract.
  • Remove from heat. Strain the sauce through a mesh strainer or sieve into a serving dish.
  • Serve warm sauce over hot slices of Apple Bread Pudding. This is not a thick sauce, and it will need to be stirred from time to time to keep a skin from forming on the surface. Best if served immediately.

Happy Birthday Paul Bunyon

I remember learning about tale tales and one of my favorite characters was Paul Bunyon. Paul was a mighty man with a big heart and a bull named Blue. It is believed by those in Bangor Maine that Paul was born February 12. Paul Bunyon character was based on a French Canadian timber man named Fabian "Joe" Fournier. Others say the character comes from French Canadian slang word "Bonyenne" which in English means "good grief" which was a term to express something extraordinary Perhaps the story of the French Canadians created Paul Bunyan to keep those involved in the rebellion of 1873 spirits up. However the character of Paul Bunyan came about it was the story telling that brought him to life and help exaggerate his strength. The first written publications came about in 1910 when James McGillivray shared the story and later W.B. Laughead published the lumberjack tales in 1916

veggie pancakes

The first time I ever had veggie pancakes was when I was a teenage girl. My family had just moved to southern Illinois and a lot of things were different. Perhaps the  one thing that I liked most was the kindness of all those that I met. One little lady who had a garden much like my grandmothers would bring delicious goodies to my mother and  she also taught my mom to cook these delicious goodies as well. I hope you enjoy as I did

2 cups shredded veggies (I like to use a mix including things like white potatoes, sweet potatoes, zucchini, yellow squash and/or carrots…whatever you have on hand)
2 eggs
1 tablespoon whole-wheat flour
¼ teaspoon salt
Olive oil for cooking
Optional garnish: sour cream and/or applesauce
Combine the shredded veggies with the eggs, flour, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
Heat a thin layer of olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. It is important that the heat is the right temperature because you want the pancakes to cook all the way through the middle by the time they are brown on the outside. Once the oil has heated up add pancake size dollops of the veggie mixture into the pan. Cook for several minutes until the bottom starts to brown. Then flip and repeat.
Transfer cooked pancakes to a plate lined with paper towels.
Serve warm with sour cream and/or applesauce.
